Thursday 12th July 2012 - Ping Pong

 

How much fun can you have with a ping pong ball?  Well, we built towers out of drinking straws with a plastic cup at the top and bounce the ping pong balls into them.  Later we played table top blow football.

Tuesday 10th July 2012 - "Citius, Altius, Fortius" ("Faster, Higher, Stronger")

 

The 2012 Olympic Games starts in just a couple of weeks.  We held our own mini-games which included the following track & field events:

1. The backwards crab-walk relay;

2. The drinking straw javelin into a bucket throw;

3. The standing long jump;

4. The bean bag shot put;

5. The hoola hoop;

6. The wierd combo golf/croquet/curling ball into a goal; and

7. The ping pong ball egg & spoon relay

 

Also, Bagheera presented commemorative Queen's Diamond Jubilee Scout Medals for best attendance at weekly troop meetings and for best attendance (and participation) at the monthly Church Parade Service.

Scout Community Week is a UK-wide fundraising initiative, supported by B&Q, to help Scouts 'do 1 thing' to have an impact on their community.  Scout Community Week gives us the chance to work together on community projects or events to raise money for local and national Scouting.

Thursday 29th March 2012 - Easter & chocolate

 

Spring arrived!  We played outside for the first time in months.  The only thing that could get us back indoors was chocolate - we made chocolate nests, dipped marshmallows and played the always popular chocolate relay race.

Tuesday 27th March 2012 - Scouts mapping

 

We started planning for the next District Scouting event - the marathon cycle ride from Fourteen Locks to Penalta Park.  By using the map six-figure grid references we were able to plot the route and all the checkpoints along the way.  For more information, go to our Future Events page.

Tuesday 20th March 2012 - Balancing biscuits

This was one of those games that sounded good in principle but was actually hard to play.  Imagine playing football when you are sat in a chair.  We've no idea which team won or what the score was.

We enjoyed a brilliant evening visiting Newport Central Fire Station, off Malpas Road, for our Fire Safety Awareness activity badge and our Community Challenge award.

Tonight we learnt about the Chinese New Year, made some red envelopes and enjoyed a Chinese banquet.

Thursday 19th January 2012 - Cubs Homehelper Badge

 

The first part of gaining this badge involves learning how to clean, polish and generally tidy up.  But this also means we need to understand how to use cleaning products safely and to take care when using electrical tools, especially a hot flat iron.

 

The second part requires us to keep a daily log of our cleaning and tidying activities when we are at home, bed making, washing up etc.  One these logs have been update for a whole week we need to bring them back to Akela as evidence of all our hard work.

Tuesday 17th January 2012 - Scouts do some more planning

 

Last week we planned what we are going to do this year; this week we talked about how.  Look forward to a lot of walking.

Thursday 12th January 2012 - Cubs meet back after Christmas break

 

First night back; we found out what Father Christmas brought us.

 

We also played a few games that relied on three important things: listening, understanding and asking questions.

Tuesday 10th January 2012 - Scout planning night

 

Tonight we all sat down and planned what we intend to achieve in the next seven months:

  • Finish off our Community Challenge award and gain our Fitness Challenge award,
  • Spend five or more nights outside to earn our Nights Away stage 5 badge, and
  • Gain either or Mechanics activity or our caving activity badge... Hmmm, not sure about that last one.

We also plan to fit in some hikes and even night hikes and maybe even a quiz night to raise some funds for the troop to go on camp.

Thursday 15th December 2011 - Cubs Santa hunt and McDonald's Christmas party

 

Before our party we explored the neighbourhood, searching for Santa and counting snowmen and reindeers and descovering which is the most popular colour of Christmas light - green, we think, or maybe red.

Tuesday 13th December 2011 - Scouts Christmas Fun

 

Not to be out-done by the cubs, tonight we made our own edible snowmen and Rudolphs.  We also had a competition to see which team could make the longest newspaper chain and we played the always popular chocolate relay race.  We finished the night by telling some the worst ever jokes from crackers.

Thursday 24th November 2011 - Cubs Map Reader Badge week 2

 

The second week of our mapping skills; we followed compass directions and tested our ordnance survey identifications.

Tuesday 22nd November 2011 - Scouts visited by Neighbourhood Policing Team

Thursday 17th November 2011 - Cubs Map Reader Badge week 1

 

Tonight we practiced reading a map, recognising map symbols, using a compass and identifying grid references.

Tuesday 15th November 2011, Scouts cook and taste pre-pouched camp food

 

Available from most camp or outdoors shops, ready-to-eat meals in a pouch are great for making a delicious meal in very little time and without any real effort.  In just 7-8 minutes our boil-in-the bag meals were ready for sampling - we tried chicken casarole, spicy vegetable & pasta, meatballs & pasta, and chocolate pudding.  But our favourite was Chilli con carne, yum!  Click here or on the photo to see more.

Thursday 10th November 2011 - Cubs 'Fireworks' games night

 

Continuing last weeks' fireworks and bonfire night crafts and activities, all our games tonight involved a firework theme... BANG!!

Tuesday 8th November 2011 - Newspaper Hockey

 

In the fine tradition of inventing new games, we came up with something involving newspapers and which looked like hockey, and we called it "Newspaper Hockey".

We made edible fireworks out of sweets and paper fountains with colourful streamers.

Tuesday 18th October 2011 - Community Walk

 

This week we walked around our community and considered the things in our neighbourhood that we may see every day and not particularly like, for instance litter.  One organisation that is doing its bit to clean up this unwanted mess is McDonalds, click here to learn more.

Thursday 13th October 2011 - Weather Week 1

 

Where does wind come from and how do we measure it?  We learnt about tornadoes and hurricanes and even saw one... in a pop bottle!! Honest.  We made wind socks and started building our wind-o-meter.  Click here to learn more about wind.

Tuesday 11th October 2011 - Mapping, Compass Points and Grid References

 

We did a few simple exercises to refresh our map reading and navigation skills.  This also involved identifying several well-known local landmarks and then finding them on an Ordnance Survey® map of Newport.

Thursday 6th October 2011 - Hedgehogs

 

After a few weeks of unseasonally warm weather, Autumn has arrived.  We talked about hedgehogs and how it is important to check under bonfires before lighting them in case any hedgehogs are sleeping there.  To learn more about out prickley friends click on the photo or visit www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk.

Tuesday 4th October 2011 - Soap Box Derby trials

Having spent all last weekend building our kart, we had exhaustive trials in the car park to devise the best racing set-up.  Obviously, we can't publish all the details here just yet in case our rivals are checking out this website [which they do].

This week we learnt about Celtic Crosses and we made our own using clay.

Tuesday 27th September 2011 - Toffee Apple Night

 

Not to be outdone by the cubs, we had a similar apple-tasting session... but we also made cooked our own runny toffee mixture in to which we dipped our apples.  To get the recipe click on this link.

We invested five new Cubs whom have recently moved up from Beavers.

 

Tonight we celebrated the humble apple - we tried different varieties, learnt about others and played, of course, crab-apple football!!

Tuesday 20th September 2011 - Scouts Community Challenge Award Planning night

 

We started thinking about how we are going to earn our Community Challenge Award.  We discussed types of issues that trouble our communities and what sort of things we could do to make our communities better.  We also invented Crab-Dodgeball.

Thursday 15th September 2011 - National Cupcake Week

Tuesday 13th September 2011 - Makaton & Crab Football

 

We learnt the scout promise using Makaton, a signing language which provides a basic means of communication and encourages language development in children and adults who have communication problems.  Click on this link to learn the scout promise.  Then we had a mamoth game of crab football using ur brand new goalposts.
