Newport District Scouts Soap Box Derby

 

RULES

 

General

• There are no specific rules regarding the design of a soap box kart except that it needs to be a push kart with no drive mechanisms, wheels have a maximum diameter of 510mm (20inches) and all spokes must be enclosed within appropriate shields.

• Helmets need to be worn (by driver) at all times as well as gloves, long trousers and long sleeves (by driver and pushers).

• Karts can have a maximum of 2 pushers and 1 driver.

• Where possible teams can be organised at the event and can comprise of members from different troops.

 

Sprint

• This will be a simple race along the track between 2 or more karts. Races will be decided on a first past the post decision.

• The sprint will be for teams of 3 members. Team members may be alternated between heats.

• The sprint will be run as heats followed by finals. There will be “A” finals and “B” finals to determine final positions. Teams competing in the “A” final will be placed in the first positions on the results sheet, teams in the “B” final will be placed in the following positions.

• Points will be awarded in ascending order with the team in the final position receiving one point and each position further up receiving an additional one point.

 

Relay

• This will be a race from the top of the course to the end of the track and back. The course will be in a ring layout comprising of straights only with a single turn at the half way point.

• Teams will need to carry a baton from one end to the other and must swap drivers at the start position for every lap, pushers should also be swapped for each lap. Each lap of the race must have a different driver i.e. all five team members must drive one lap of the race. If there are less than 5 in a team then drivers can be used again until all five laps are completed.

• In the relay you have a team size of 5 maximum.

• The relay should be run as one race with positions determined on a first past the post decision. If heats are required results will be determined as above.

• Points will be awarded in ascending order with the team in the final position receiving two points and each position further up receiving an additional two points.

 

Slalom Relay

• This will be a race from the top of the course to the end of the track and back. The course will be in a ring layout comprising of fixed points that karts have to negotiate alternately left and right with a single turn at the half way point. All karts will start on the left hand side of their start point and pass the first obstacle to the right.

• Teams will need to carry a baton from one end to the other and must swap drivers at the start position for every lap, pushers should also be swapped for each lap. Each lap of the race must have a different driver i.e. all five team members must drive one lap of the race. If there are less than 5 in a team then drivers can be used again until all five laps are completed.

• In the slalom relay you have a team size of 5 maximum.

• The slalom relay should be run as one race with positions determined on a first past the post decision. If heats are required results will be determined as above.

• Points will be awarded in ascending order with the team in the final position receiving two points and each position further up receiving an additional two points.

 

Endurance

• An endurance race where drivers and pushers can be changed throughout the race at the end of each lap. Races will be endurance races of 5 mins. The course will be a ring layout, up and down the course and round obstacles. Lap 2 of the race will be a speed time trial and the time of the lap will be recorded.

• In the endurance race you can have a team size of 5 maximum.

• Teams will be positioned according to the number of laps completed. Points will be awarded in ascending order with the team in the final position receiving two points and each position further up receiving an additional two points. In the event of two or more teams completing the same number of laps then the time recorded at lap two will be used to determine final positions.

• Teams will also be ranked according to their time trial result and points will be awarded in ascending order with the team in the final position receiving one point and each position further up receiving an additional one point.

 

The Soap Box Derby winner will be determined by the team scoring the most points during the entire event.

 

It should also be understood that the sole purpose of this event is to have fun. Emphasis is placed on participation, not winning and is designed to be a fun afternoon out.
